Painter Sumiyo Toribe shares her joy in the daily experiences of life through watercolor, sumi ink, and oil paint. She loves to experiment with different media, forms, and even paper sizes. Toribe often works across three sheets of paper spanning more than five feet to create large triptychs that boldly capture the exuberance of a fall landscape, then shifts her focus to create tiny, intimate mini-paintings of dancing daisies or the branches of a flowering cherry tree. Born in Japan and now residing in central Massachusetts, Toribe’s paintings reflect her multi-cultural experience, with eastern and western influences artfully blended in the work. Her watercolor technique is considered unique as she uses the flow of water to draw spontaneously and convey energy in her paintings. The outcome is artwork that is simultaneously expressive and impressionistic, abstract and representational. "Autumn Harmony": Tryptych November 2017 no. 4; watercolor omn paper; 45" x 22"
