“I call them the old gray ancients,” says Stephen Ray about the barns he paints. Ray works in acrylics on wood panels, and his beautifully rendered barn “portraits” reveal as much about the artist as they do about America’s most iconic rural structures. “My affinity for these weathered barns stems from both my appreciation for woodworking and my respect for the grace-filled farming way of life, which is disappearing all too quickly.” He often chooses an unusual vantage point, painting a barn on an open, barren hillside, standing alone against an ominous sky. From this view they seem almost mythic, like a pyramid or a cathedral.
