As I travel the globe, I look through my cameras lens and move more slowly, breathe more deeply and become part of the world around me. My images focus on the intersection and interplay of color, light and line of the natural and man-made world to tell a story of what has been, what is, or what will or can be.

Raised on film and in a darkroom, I expose and frame through the lens, as with film, even though I now shoot digital. I believe photography is the art and science of painting with light, and that a negative is still a negative regardless if it is a glass plate, a roll of film or an SD card. My love of the photographic printing process combined with a belief that bringing the image to life on paper is as much a part of the creative process as clicking the shutter, leads me to personally create archival prints of my images whenever possible.

Using my camera as an artist would use a paintbrush, I think of my work as visual alchemy: a transformation not of matter into gold but of light, color, and line into images. Intentional camera movement (ICM) and multiple exposure techniques allow me to challenge reality and capture a feeling, emotion or impression rather than simply recording what lies in front of my lens. The multiple exposure images of my My Portal to the Past series reflect the layers of the more than 2,000 years of history of the Basilica San Clemente in Rome. In Venice it was all about the light over the Grand Canal and the never ending movement of the gondolas, while in Burano as seen here — and as always — it’s about the colored houses.
