Jonathan Rutledge uses the ancient art of granulation, a process in which tiny gold spheres are fused onto a gold form, to create intricate, elegant jewelry. He works primarily in high karat gold for its deep, rich color and the visual contrast between the warm gold and the brilliant cut gemstones. Rutledge has a degree in political science, a master’s degree in fine arts and a career stint as a firefighter. He started creating his dramatic line of gold brooches, earrings and necklaces after serving in the military. “I spent time in Europe while in the service, and I really developed a love of art,” he said. “I became fascinated by Greek and Etruscan jewelry.”
