Focus: Jeff Grassie
Finding Patterns Everywhere
Some people see animals in clouds, faces in rocks or gods and
goddesses in the stars. Jeff Grassie looks at wood grain and sees a
world of patterns and images, waiting to be released with the edge of
a chisel, the blade of a saw and the imagination of a wide-open
mind. As he sees it, “A lot of the art is already in the wood, and
my job is to enhance it.”
Grassie’s latest carved guitar, Predator, took over 325 hours to design. It
features sharp zig-zagging patterns across the entire body of the guitar,
including the back and sides. Below, Reunite, 30" x 36". Wood, metal,
glass, coal, printing machine parts, marbles and leather.
"I am a handyman by trade, so I use my skills and
knowledge of electric saws, chisels and other tools
to create exceptional art made of wood, stone,
metal, glass and mixed media. I thrive on constantly
challenging myself and stretching my boundaries.”
Besides his sculptures of salvaged wood and
metal, Grassie is also known for custom carved
guitars, book cover artwork, and public art in
his hometown of Haverhill, MA, including
the Essex Street Gateway Mural. His work is
in the Robert M. and Lillian Montalto Bohlen
Collection of Wood Art and he was invited to
create a commemorative piece for the Attleboro
Art Museum, Invincible, dedicated to the victims
of the Boston Marathon bombing.
