James Borden’s striking series, “Timeshapes”, are kinetic wooden sculptures that do indeed keep time.
Carved and lathed from Midwestern hardwoods and run by springs or weights, some of these dramatic works are more than twenty feet tall, while others are suitable for a living room wall or a tabletop. The pendulums and gears exhibit a wide, graceful motion and soft, woody, clicking sounds which are mesmerizing and relaxing to watch and hear.
He says, “I am attracted to basic forms – a particular curve or arch, spiral or taper. The essential shape of a thing catches my eye – a tree in winter; the outline of an animal; the pose of a dancer.”
“Flight”, walnut and cherry weight-driven timepiece. 9’w x 4’h.
