Karen Hibbs spends most of her days surrounded by 350-million-year-old fossils — swirled creatures like ammonites left over from the Cretaceous Period, or perhaps other prehistoric animals such as trilobites and crinoids as well as fossilized fish and ferns, stalactites and shale. Contrary to what you might think, Hibbs is not a geologist. She’s an artist who’s found new ways to display these dramatic shapes and life-forms in her glassworks.
Her studio is filled with colorful panes of glass, some beveled and etched; others contained in bright, glowing globules of color that she buffs and tumbles until they reach exactly the right degree of roughness. Contemporary, but with an old-world sensibility, her work is perfect for any décor.
