My recent paintings look a little wild asymmetrical mandalas. They spiral out from intertwining roots and twist around each other. In some, I include text from my notes about the folklore and medicinal properties of the plants.

I’m inspired by the writings of folklorist Sharon Blackie and botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer. I wonder if the land and plants remember the people who lived with them and tended them. I’m interested in our ancestor’s reliance on and cooperation with the natural world. I’m hoping to strengthen my own connection to the land with my attention to these plants and by reading up on their stories.
