ED BRANSON

Hot Glass! Glassblower Ed Branson shows us how it’s done in this video. One of the most beautiful and transformational of all craft media, blowing glass is dramatic, fiery, and sometimes dangerous.

Ed writes, “My knowledge of this magic material is built on day-to-day experience and practice in my studio. This path has led me to a fairly simple artistic approach; trust the glass, have fun, accept mistakes, study nature and search for beautiful forms and colors inherent in glass’ personality.”

ANN BRAUER

Quilting as an art form — that’s what Ann Brauer demonstrates in this video from her Shelburne Falls, MA studio. She finds her inspiration in the rural landscape that surrounds her – the ever-changing river, mountains, farms, meadows and sky. Ann’s work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Art and Design in NYC. She received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Arts.

LISA AND SCOTT CYLINDER

Storytelling, animals and the recycling of found objects are all part and parcel of the jewelry created by Lisa and Scott Cylinder. 

In this video they talk about fables, music and humor as they share how their innovative jewelry comes together in their studio. Most pieces have movable, interactive elements: free swinging legs, wings, tongues and tails. You may never look at discarded musical instruments the same way again!

ERIN DRAPER

Trained in both art and fashion design and with a passion for aerial silk acrobatics, Erin Draper brings her love for art, fashion and movement into her designs. Using only luxuriously soft fabrics like jersey, silk and Tencel that feel wonderful to the touch and have enough stretch to move with you as you go through your busy day, Erin’s designs show that fashion can be statement-making and as comfortable as yoga wear.

TOM DUMKE

Tom Dumke’s tables, cabinets, and cupboards are constructed with the clever joinery techniques of Europe, but inspired by the clean, simple lines of Shaker design. Dumke creates every piece himself, carefully selecting each slab of hardwood to ensure a perfect match of raw material and design. “I like to let the figure of the wood be the focal point, along with being functional, practical and a piece of art,” he says. His work stands the test of time, both visually and structurally.

DOROTHY FAGAN

Take a tour of Chesapeake Bay artist Dorothy Fagan’s sunlit studio, and watch as she completes a commissioned triptych oil painting for a California home. She says, “feeding inspiration works like tending a garden”. Fagan leap-frogs ideas to nourish her artistic journey. It is eye-opening to see how one watercolor postcard from France turns into a triptych mural, silk scarves, and even books in this colorful, lyrical video.

HETTY FRIEDMAN

Hetty Friedman’s main inspirations are Joseph and Annie Albers – the Bauhaus artists. She also channels Guatemalan indigenous weavings,  and the paintings of Matisse and Picasso. Hetty often hand paints her yarn, combining vibrant, strong, and unusual colors. She weaves on a 36” 4 harness Le Clerc loom and an 8 harness Macomber loom which dominate the 3rd floor studio in her Newton, Massachusetts home.

SHEILA FERNEKES

Sheila Fernekes invites you into her New Jersey studio, where she creates her intricately beaded jewelry using Native American and African beading techniques. She demonstrates how thousands of colorful glass beads are woven, one by one, into stunning necklaces, earrings and bracelets. But what makes her work really stand out are the distinctive and unique clay beads she designs and creates in her studio. Watch this video of Sheila as she hand-forms polymer clay and stitches beads into spectacular one-of-a-kind jewelry.

WILLIAM McCARTHY

Landscape painter William McCarthy takes you on a studio gallery tour of his current paintings. Will works from memory and imagination, and his oil paintings are filled with Tuscan landscapes, watery vistas, dramatic skies and low horizons. A highly acclaimed artist and longtime Paradise City exhibitor, he is also an inspiring teacher. Several times a year he leads groups of aspiring artists as they paint alongside him at week-long workshops at a villa in beautiful Farnese, Italy.

KRISTIN MOGER

Kristin Moger’s incredibly detailed ink drawings of animals — wild and domesticated — are full of personality. About this video, “Dogs Playing Cards”, Kristin writes, “Did you think this might truly be dogs who play cards? Nope. These original drawings are designed playing cards with dogs on them as the King, Queen and Jack of each suit. I share a little about how I created them and the cool designs that I dreamed up… all in front of my blazing fireplace. What more could you want? Ok, maybe a wonderful drink to go with the show. THAT, you will have to get for yourself. I’m not THAT magical!”

E. KELLY O’NEAL

E. Kelly O’Neal takes you inside her booth in this video to talk about her photography, show you how she does it and see some great examples of her work. O’Neal’s work emphasizes color and movement. The movement of her camera during exposure adds a surreal, blurred quality to her dreamy, evocative photographs of the natural world. She was featured as the cover artist in the Spring 2020 Paradise City Guide.

EMILY SHAFFER

Emily Shaffer has a simple goal for her jewelry. “I focus on creating contemporary pieces that make wearers feel good and look great,” she says. She has developed an unusual technique to reach this goal. Her earrings, necklaces, and rings often feature a matte finish with oxidized components that provide visual depth. The resulting jewelry is clean, modern and versatile.

Emily is the recipient of the J. Allen Pawling Craft Memorial Award, an American Craft Week 30 Under 30 Rising Star, a 2017 Halstead Grant Top 5 Finalist, and the 2018 Halstead Grant Winner. Follow her process as she walks you through her studio in this video.

SUMIYO TORIBE

Sumiyo Toribe is an accomplished painter in watercolor, sumi ink, and oils. She often works across three sheets of paper spanning more than five feet to create large triptychs that boldly capture the exuberance of a fall landscape, then shifts her focus to create tiny, intimate mini-watercolors depicting the four seasons. In this video she has actually set up a replica of her Paradise City booth. Sumiyo talks about her work as she gives a painting demonstration.
