Spring Northampton • Virtual Studio Visits, Artist’s Videos & Presentations

How do they do it? We find that some our most memorable Paradise City moments are watching a live demonstration or learning about techniques by talking to artists in their booths. While you’re virtually shopping the show, make sure you take a tour inside these artists’ studios as they use their hands, eyes, hearts and minds every day in their work. We’ve put together a collection of artists’ videos that share the secrets of their studios, and even an opportunity for live conversations this week. Enjoy, then return to the virtual show!

FRANN ADDISON

Frann Addison invites you on a virtual video tour of her studio. Using found objects, antique elements, and traditional metal-smithing materials, tools and techniques, she shows you how she creates her unique pieces of Judaica. A Collector’s Recognition Award Finalist.

LORI AUSTILL

Lori Austill’s encaustic paintings utilize techniques that were originally developed by ancient Greeks and Egyptians in which hot beeswax, pigment, and tree sap (damar) are used as paint. By melting colored wax in tins on a griddle and using the griddle as her palette for mixing colors, she paints in thin layers, fusing one layer to the next with a propane torch. In this video, Lori takes you on a tour of her studio and her collection.

ANN BRAUER

Quilting as an art form — that’s what Ann Brauer demonstrates in this video from her Shelburne Falls, MA studio. She finds her inspiration in the rural landscape that surrounds her – the ever-changing river, mountains, farms, meadows and sky. Ann’s work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Art and Design in NYC. She received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Arts.

KAREN CALDWELL

Karen Caldwell, along with her husband Geoff, have been working in glass since 1978. The couple started out in stained glass and specialized in hand beveled windows. Throughout the years they have added more skills and type of glass into their work like Medieval glass painting and fused glass. Currently Karen is specializing in fused glass where she creates thin, intricately shaped petals and leaves. After the composition is set, they are kiln fired to use for windows and panels. The latest challenge that Karen is working on is capturing the essence of birds in fused glass and the complexity of feather details, using a transparent enamel paint for this creation. Many of these techniques are also brought into their unique tabletop collections. Visit Karen and Geoff in their studio where they show how they create their nature-inspired glass panels.

PAUL CARLINO

Furniture maker Paul Carlino is new to Paradise City but has been practicing his craft of fine woodworking for over three decades. Using only responsibly sourced hardwoods and reclaimed wood, Paul’s work, whether it is highly contemporary or inspired by tradition, always exhibits spectacular color, grain, and figuring. Take a virtual video tour of his collection to see for yourself!

LISA AND SCOTT CYLINDER

Storytelling, animals and the recycling of found objects are all part and parcel of the jewelry created by Lisa and Scott Cylinder.

In this video they talk about fables, music and humor as they share how their innovative jewelry comes together in their studio. Most pieces have movable, interactive elements: free swinging legs, wings, tongues and tails. You may never look at discarded musical instruments the same way again!

Trained in both art and fashion design and with a passion for aerial silk acrobatics, Erin Draper brings her love for art, fashion and movement into her designs. Using only luxuriously soft fabrics like jersey, silk and Tencel that feel wonderful to the touch and have enough stretch to move with you as you go through your busy day, Erin’s designs show that fashion can be statement-making and as comfortable as yoga wear.

Watch Erin show you the many ways to wear her flattering perrine and beryl shawls, plus mittens and carey gloves.

TOM DUMKE

Tom Dumke‘s tables, cabinets, and cupboards are constructed with the clever joinery techniques of Europe, but inspired by the clean, simple lines of Shaker design. Dumke creates every piece himself, carefully selecting each slab of hardwood to ensure a perfect match of raw material and design. “I like to let the figure of the wood be the focal point, along with being functional, practical and a piece of art,” he says. His work stands the test of time, both visually and structurally.

Take a virtual visit to Wisconsin in this video and watch Tom demonstrate how he designs and makes his finely crafted furniture.

DOROTHY FAGAN

Take a tour of Chesapeake Bay artist Dorothy Fagan‘s sunlit studio, and watch as she completes a commissioned triptych oil painting for a California home. She says, “feeding inspiration works like tending a garden”. Fagan leap-frogs ideas to nourish her artistic journey. It is eye-opening to see how one watercolor postcard from France turns into a triptych mural, silk scarves, and even books in this colorful, lyrical video.

SHEILA FERNEKES

Sheila Fernekes invites you into her New Jersey studio, where she creates her intricately beaded jewelry using Native American and African beading techniques. She demonstrates how thousands of colorful glass beads are woven, one by one, into stunning necklaces, earrings and bracelets. But what makes her work really stand out are the distinctive and unique clay beads she designs and creates in her studio. Watch this video of Sheila as she hand-forms polymer clay and stitches beads into spectacular one-of-a-kind jewelry. You can also arrange to Zoom her at her website’s virtual booth.

AMY GILLESPIE

Amy’s extraordinary work is innovative, sculptural, and begs to be touched. She says, “I love the intense color and texture achieved by wet-felting raw wool. My wall pieces are at once art, craft and design.  My background lies in fiber, but I’ve always been fascinated by wood. In order to achieve integration between the materials, I allow the wood to set the tone for the piece.”
