Virtual Studio Visits, Artist’s Videos & Presentations

How do they do it? We find that some our most memorable Paradise City moments are watching a live demonstration or learning about techniques by talking to artists in their booths. Wouldn’t you love to take a tour inside our artists’ studios as they use their hands, eyes, hearts and minds every day in their work? We’ve put together a collection of cool videos in which artists share some of the secrets of their studios with you. Not every secret – mystery is part and parcel of artistic creation! Enjoy, then see more of their work on the Marketplace.

FRANN ADDISON

Frann Addison invites you on a virtual video tour of her studio. Using found objects, antique elements, and traditional metal-smithing materials, tools and techniques, she shows you how she creates her unique pieces of Judaica.

The Jewish Arts Collaborative of Boston shares this video interview with Frann Addison, her musings on creating one-of-a-kind Jewish ritual objects.

MICHAEL ALFANO

Michael Alfano, a classically trained sculptor, shares this video of “Cubed”.  “Cubed” is a two-faced, interactive sculpture puzzle composed of nine multi-skin-toned puzzle pieces that can be arranged in various combinations to reveal conjoined faces – one male and one female. Michael says, “It challenges us to consider the nuances of race, labels like gender, art as a fixed product of its creator, and the constant admonishment ‘do not touch the artwork.”

MARJOLAINE ARSENAULT

A PBS “House of Arts” video interview with nuno felting master Marjolaine Arsenault. Join producer Matt Rogowicz on a trip to Marjolaine’s studio, and learn about the history and process of this ancient craft form.

JOANNE BAST

New exhibitor Joanne Bast talks about the array of colors, textures, and techniques available to her as a multi-media fiber artist in this video filmed in her studio.

ED BRANSON

Hot Glass! Glassblower Ed Branson shows us how it’s done in this video. One of the most beautiful and transformational of all craft media, blowing glass is dramatic, fiery, and sometimes dangerous. Ed writes, “My knowledge of this magic material is built on day-to-day experience and practice in my studio. This path has led me to a fairly simple artistic approach; trust the glass, have fun, accept mistakes, study nature and search for beautiful forms and colors inherent in glass’ personality.”

LISA AND SCOTT CYLINDER

Storytelling, animals and the recycling of found objects are all part and parcel of the jewelry created by Lisa and Scott Cylinder. In this video they talk about fables, music and humor as they share how their innovative jewelry comes together in their studio. Most pieces have movable, interactive elements: free swinging legs, wings, tongues and tails. You may never look at discarded musical instruments the same way again!

MARY-ALICE DALTON

The beautifully designed and tailored children’s clothing handmade by Mary-Alice Dalton is highlighted in this fascinating PBS New Hampshire Chronicle video.

CHRISTY KNOX

Christy Knox lives deep in the countryside of Western Massachusetts. Her work reflects her love of clay, and of nature. She says, “Whether I am gardening or making pots, seeking out texture and color relationships, sipping tea, or feeding my children, my pots are a part and product of it all. It is my life, and it is what I have to share.” In this video, join Christy in her studio as she shares her methods, inspiration and artistry.

MAYA MACHIN

Watch Maya Machin make one of her “Pelican Pitchers” from start to finish! Pitchers and teapots – anything with a handle and spout – truly test a potter’s mastery of clay and technique.

Maya also set up a very engaging virtual studio video for a recent local pottery tour, and she is happy to share it with Paradise City. Maya shows off her work, her wheel, her wood-fired kiln, and the country setting of her home and studio.

WILLIAM McCARTHY

Landscape painter William McCarthy takes you on a studio gallery tour of his current paintings. Will works from memory and imagination, and his oil paintings are filled with Tuscan landscapes, watery vistas, dramatic skies and low horizons. A highly acclaimed artist and longtime Paradise City exhibitor, he is also an inspiring teacher. Several times a year he leads groups of aspiring artists as they paint alongside him at week-long workshops at a villa in beautiful Farnese, Italy.

KRISTIN MOGER

Kristin Moger’s incredibly detailed ink drawings of animals — wild and domesticated — are full of personality. About this video, “Dogs Playing Cards”, Kristin writes, “Did you think this might truly be dogs who play cards? Nope. These original drawings are designed playing cards with dogs on them as the King, Queen and Jack of each suit. I share a little about how I created them and the cool designs that I dreamed up… all in front of my blazing fireplace. What more could you want? Ok, maybe a wonderful drink to go with the show. THAT, you will have to get for yourself. I’m not THAT magical!”

E. KELLY O’NEAL

E. Kelly O’Neal takes you inside her booth in this video to talk about her photography, show you how she does it and see some great examples of her work. O’Neal’s work emphasizes color and movement. The movement of her camera during exposure adds a surreal, blurred quality to her dreamy, evocative photographs of the natural world. She was featured as the cover artist in the Spring 2020 Paradise City Guide.

SHOW DIRECTOR and ARTIST LINDA H. POST

Video tour with narration by Paradise City Founding Director and fine artist Linda H. Post of her recent solo show at R. Michelson Galleries in Northampton, The Willing Suspension of Disbelief. Post’s distinctive paintings are of women, the sea, mysterious encounters and uncommon places. She shares her painting progress and thoughts on a regular basis on her blog: https://www.lhpost.com/blog

SUMIYO TORIBE

Sumiyo Toribe is an accomplished painter in watercolor, sumi ink, and oils. She often works across three sheets of paper spanning more than five feet to create large triptychs that boldly capture the exuberance of a fall landscape, then shifts her focus to create tiny, intimate mini-watercolors depicting the four seasons. In this video she has actually set up a replica of her Paradise City booth. Sumiyo talks about her work as she gives a painting demonstration.

ELLIE WYETH

Want to see how Ellie Wyeth’s whimsical, painterly floorcloths are made? She takes you on a video studio tour, describes her process and talks about where her ideas come from.
