Joie de vivre is a French phrase often used in English to express a
cheerful enjoyment of life; an exultation of spirit. It’s safe to say
that the spirit of the artist/maker can’t help but infuse an artist’s

work. Whether there is an evident “joie de vivre”, a wry humor, a
Lunch, Dinner, Sunday solemn reflection or a heartfelt aesthetic sigh, that exulting spirit of

a commercially produced, designed-by-committee, manufactured
object! It’s just not there. It’s why you buy handmade earrings, a

Celebrating art is only one side of the coin. This fall, Paradise City’s
artists explore the flip side in a scintillating special exhibition
titled “Life of the Party! The Art of Celebration.” Ritual celebrations
have existed since time immemorial. One can picture our early
forebears dancing around a roaring fire reveling in a successful
hunt. We look forward to annual festivities commemorating
birthdays or anniversaries, weddings and graduations. There are
religious celebrations and secular gaiety around the changing of the
seasons. We love parades and use them to celebrate the winning of
elections, the crowning of sports champions and the end of wars.
Craft makers have often used these events as a source of inspiration,
creating all sorts of accouterments that enrich our celebrations.
Through painting, photography and sculpture artists give us back
memories, capturing the essence of what it is to rejoice.
At both Paradise City shows this fall, you’ll find original work that
will enhance your own celebrations and pieces that commemorate
all occasions of merriment and good cheer. You’ll come to Paradise
City to celebrate art, but you’ll leave feeling like the “Life of the
Party” when you bring home your own treasured memento from
the “Art of Celebration!”
See you around the fairs…
