Frann Addison’s “Inro Spicebox” won the Niche Award in Judaica in 2016. It was inspired by the Japanese Inro, a small compartmented carrying case that was hung from the user’s obi. (sash) The Hebrew word, bsamim, (spices) is hand pierced from the highly polished pewter. It is through these letters that the fragrance of the spice emanates. At the termination of the Sabbath, this spicebox would be passed from person to person by holding the handmade bead and silver chain. Inhaling the sweet aroma of the spices symbolizes the hope of a sweet week to come!
